The rapier is a fancy sword. Extremely light, thin, flexible piercing blade. A wielder who knows how to use Swords can use it with that skill (it’s not that different from a shortsword), but does not gain the +2 to disarm that a Fencing Weapons user gains. Most self-respecting warriors would rather fight bare-handed than use one of these. A favorite among noble youths and city bravoes. It is certainly true that a skilled wielder can pull amazing stunts with a rapier, but it is also a weapon designed for fighting other weapons of the same class. Rapiers gain a +1 parry bonus, but they don’t do much to stop heavy weapons. Successful parries against most two-handed weapons, maces, and hammers have a high chance of breaking the rapier. In game terms an opponent wielding a heavy weapon gains a free sunder attempt after being parried by a rapier. The rapier is at -2 to rolls against such breakage. Many an arrogant little lordling has met his end because that ever-so-clever little parry trick didn’t work so well against a warhammer.
